Unicef – Article of the Week

By 24 April 2023May 17th, 2023No Comments

The week we are exploring the idea of Care and Adoption. The following articles are linked to this theme:

Article 9 (separation from parents) Children must not be separated from their parents against their will unless it is in their best interests (for example, if a parent is hurting or neglecting a child). Children whose parents have separated have the right to stay in contact with both parents, unless this could cause them harm.

Article 20 (children unable to live with their family) If a child cannot be looked after by their immediate family, the government must give them special protection and assistance. This includes making sure the child is provided with alternative care that is continuous and respects the childā€™s culture, language and religion.

Article 21 (adoption) Governments must oversee the process of adoption to make sure it is safe, lawful and that it prioritises childrenā€™s best interests. Children should only be adopted outside of their country if they cannot be placed with a family in their own country.

Article 25 (review of treatment in care) If a child has been placed away from home for the purpose of care or protection (for example, with a foster family or in hospital), they have the right to a regular review of their treatment, the way they are cared for and their wider circumstances.

Why not have a go at one of the following activities to help you understand this week’s theme a little better.

Activity 1

ā€˜All About Meā€™ Draw a picture of yourself with the people who look after you. You might like to add details about who they are. Share your drawing and talk about it with a classmate.

Activity 2

Read The Blanket Bears by Samuel Langley-Swain about little bears who are being cared for by foster carers. What did their foster carers do to make the little bears feel safe and welcome? How were the bears involved in choosing their forever family? You can also watch this video.

Activity 3

Have you ever been away from your parents, carers or family, perhaps on a school trip or a sleepover with a friend? What did you miss the most? How did you keep in touch? Write some top tips for keeping in touch if people canā€™t be together.
