State of Matter Workshop

Year 4 had an exciting opportunity to work alongside real scientists to investigate the states of matter through hands-on experiments. We explored the differences between solids, liquids, and gases and discovered how materials can change state under different conditions.

We experimented with Oobleck, a fascinating substance that behaves like both a solid and a liquid. By squeezing, poking, and letting it flow through our fingers, we observed how it changed depending on the force applied.

Using Rice Krispies, we explored how materials change state, examining how heating and cooling can transform ingredients. We also discussed real-world examples of these changes in everyday life.

In our mystery box challenge, we tested our sense of touch to determine whether different hidden objects were solid, liquid, or gas. This activity encouraged us to think carefully about the properties of materials and how we recognise different states of matter.

Finally, we investigated the effects of heat and cold on materials, observing how some substances melt, freeze, or evaporate. This deepened our understanding of key scientific processes such as melting, freezing, condensation, and evaporation.

Working with real scientists made our learning even more exciting, and we were inspired by their knowledge and enthusiasm for science. It was a fantastic experience that helped us see how science is all around us, shaping the world we live in.
